How much experience do I need to compete in Wushu?

I have about 1 years worth of training in wushu. Is there a tournament where novice practitioners can compete in?|||Modern wushu is composed of two disciplines: taolu (forms) and sanda (sparring). Taolu forms are similar to gymnastics and involve martial art patterns and maneuvers for which competitors are judged and given points according to specific rules. The forms comprise basic movements (stances, kicks, punches, balances, jumps, sweeps and throws) based on aggregate categories traditional Chinese martial art style and can be changed for competitions to highlight one%26#039;s strengths. Competitive forms have time limits that can range from 1 minute, 20 seconds for the some external styles to over five minutes for internal styles. Modern wushu competitors are increasingly training in aerial techniques such as 540 and 720 degree jumps and kicks to add more difficulty and style to their forms. Given the level of difficulty in these forms, you would require approximately 3 - 5 years of consistent practice to compete an national level.

Sanda (sometimes called sanshou or Lei Tai) is a modern fighting method and sport influenced by both traditional Chinese boxing, Chinese wrestling methods called Shuai Chiao and other Chinese grappling techniques such as Qin Na. It has all the combat aspects of wushu. Sanda appears much like kickboxing or Muay Thai, but includes many more grappling techniques. Sanda fighting competitions are often held alongside taolu or form competitions. It takes considerably less time to develop sanda techniques than taolu, so you would be able to enter sparring competitions sooner than you would forms.

Given wu shu%26#039;s structured learning syllabus, I would not be surprised if your organisation hosts tournament events for both forms and sparring, even at your level. Speak to your instructor, who will be able to contact the organisation head quarters for more info.

Good luck.

Does anyone know where i can start Wushu (or Kung Fu) in Middlesex, uk? Or anywhere near there?

Id like to start, after finishing a seven year run of Judo. I want to try something new, and i liked the idea of Wushu. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Or an idea of what a session is like? And any clubs near by Middlesex, Uk? Soz I havent a clue...Thanks|||emm|||best bet go onto the bccma website and they will know of classes local to you etc|||Wait youre going to move away from a real martial art to a foo foo art like kung foo?

What should i do to control my balance in practicing wushu?

when we practice wushu, i always fell down to the floor. and my instructor is shouting at me, he sead that you need to control your balance. What should I do?|||set forms, help alot.

Hand and then weapon forms are a part of the training.

An example is a hand form that teachs first a single sword and then a double sword form.

That is what it takes to earn a green belt in San Soo with a total of 120 combat techniques.

Now add the next hand form that teachs the long pole, or 6%26#039; staff. Then your a brown add 40 more techniques.

Now add that next hand form that teachs another weapon set. And add another 40 techniques and well your on your way to a BB in San Soo.

If no balance your forms will suck, and it will be obvious in your weapon skills as the clip I showed earlier displayed. Weapon skills are different than those of hand to hand. Or one in the same, depending on training principle.|||practice at home because you need great cordination and you don%26#039;t have it at all i didn%26#039;t have the perfect balence like they want you to have in wushu so i dropped out and became a black belt in a simple art takwondo|||Learn to stand.If you can stand on one leg and stoop down and stand up again then you will have balance.|||Standing on one foot for equal lengths on each one will greatly increase your balance.

How long does it take to get good at Wushu?

I want to start training in Wushu some time soon, but could someone tell me how long it takes to get pretty good?

In case it matters, I%26#039;m 15, Male, and already in very good physical condition.|||Wu shu is not a %26#039;sporty dance%26#039; art i%26#039;m sorry. If you%26#039;re learning something named Wu shu and it is sporty artlike then you need to learn something else. Traditional MA Wu Shu is extremely acrobatic and very very difficult to master, even learn. Before you try wu shu you%26#039;re expected to be naturally very acrobatic or have a capacity to be as such. If not, you need not apply.

Good example of a Wu Shu Master is Jet Li, it really isnt much of a combat art. Even traditionally.|||about half an hour.|||It is a vague question. If by %26quot;good%26quot; you mean able to win first place in your category at an invitational, I%26#039;d say about 5 years.|||sporty dance kind? If you want to learn this for showing off, don%26#039;t do it. There are always people out there ready to find out how much real art you know and are looking for a fight. If you want to dance, learn something like step. Then show off.

How is the winner determined in a WUSHU competition?

At the 2008 Olympics China will be holding a WUSHU tournament and I was wondering how this style of martial arts works.. I have seen Karate, Taekwondo, and Judo tournaments, but never WUSHU.|||The performance will be based on three scores - A, B and C. The A score (overall performance) is 5 points of 10. The B score is quality of movement and is 3points of 10. The C score is called nandu (level of difficulty) and involves the artist following a prescribed set of difficult movements (mostly jumps and variations of landings though there are others as well) each with a set amount oof points, depending on whether or not it is followed my a connecting move- ex: jumping inside cresecent kick to horse stance (mabu) or into the splits... into the splits will give you more points, thus is greater nandu... When you register for a tournament, you send in a form showing the order all of your nandu will be performed in (and the possible points each nandu will bring you totalling up to 2.00 points- any more is not nandu points, but quality of movement and overall performance), and you must follow it or risk large deductions. Most nandu is between .1 and .3 depending on how you connect moves together. Not all athletes start with 2.00 nandu possible- I have teammates that start with 1.85 possible (meaning you can%26#039;t get a perfect 10, but no one ever does anyway, even China%26#039;s all-around champion) and they work their A and B scores more- nandu is very tiring, so it%26#039;s better to keep good form and not risk blowing a jump which can result in up to .7 a fall depending on how badly you blow it, and how many nandu points you miss by not performing it. These scores are only for longfist(changquan) and southernfist, staff and spear, broadsword and straightsword- most other open division weapons in wushu are not judged with nanu. In fact, weapons in general are not usually judged with nandu at this point in the US.. .in the future they may be required to have nandu in all forms. Generally it%26#039;s only handforms (non-weapon) that have required nandu. Whether or not this changes depends very much on what the Chinese Wushu Federation decides to make its international standard. I hope this helps- it%26#039;s late and I%26#039;m really tired so I%26#039;m maybe not as clear as I%26#039;d like to be though. Cheers- please enjoy wushu and support them at the 2008 Beijing Games where it will debut as a demo sport!!!|||Easy. Jet Li enters. Jet Li wins.

What is the purpose of "wushu" or "spring" steel?

I am a big fan of Wushu fighting methods, and do enjoy watching competitions. But after much deliberation and experiments I%26#039;ve conducted, I can%26#039;t find any reason to opt for a weapon made from Wushu, or spring steel other than the pretty sounds it makes. Could someone out there explain to me why all the Wushu weapon forms are preformed with this flimsy and weak metal?|||My guess would be because of the weight and the flash. The weight of the weapons make them extremely easy to perform the routines and to keep the martial artists in balance. If the weapons were real, the weight of them would make it almost impossible to stop a motion and stay in balance. The noise may be another reason. They make the sword sound faster moving through the air. This is only a guess, but hopefully it%26#039;s a good one. LOL|||Do the springs on your car seem %26quot;Flimsy %26amp; Weak%26quot;

Or able to peform for years and years under a lot of abuse and harsh conditions?|||That%26#039;s easy enough, Wushu is gung-fu ballet. Since you can do all the silly %26quot;flowery%26quot; movements with spring-steel, that%26#039;s why it%26#039;s used.

There%26#039;s really not much more to it than that. Wushu is for showmanship, not combat. You don%26#039;t have to train ging in Wushu, and in turn, you don%26#039;t have to use the carbon steel weighted weaponry for the purpose of that skill in fighting.

That%26#039;s why I let go off all the extra-fancy classical gung fu in pursuit of combat effective arts like Xingyiquan (which is nothing but simplicity, and ging-usage).

Wushu.....?

What can you tell me about wushu? Eventually, I want to learn it.

Thanks. :-)|||To describe wushu, it is best to understand the philosophy of its teaching. Every movement must exhibit sensible combat application and aestheticism. The wealth of wushu%26#039;s content, the beauty of wushu movents, the difficulty factor, and the scientific training methods are the song of the elements that set wushu apart from martial arts. Routines are performed solo, paired or in groups, either barehanded or armed with traditional Chinese weaponry. In short, wushu is the most exciting martial art to be seen, felt, and ultimately practiced.

How is wushu related to kung fu and taijiquan? %26quot;Wushu%26quot; is the correct term for all Chinese martial arts therefore kung fu and wushu were originally the same. During the last thirty years, wushu in Mainland China was modernized so that there could be a universal standard for training and competing. In essence, much emphasis has been placed on speed, difficulty, and presentation. Consequently, wushu has become an athletic and aesthetic performance and competitive sport, while %26quot;kung fu%26quot; or traditional wushu remains the traditional fighting practice. Taijiquan is a major division of wushu, utilizing the body%26#039;s internal energy or %26quot;chi%26quot; and following the simple principle of %26quot;subduing the vigorous by the soft.%26quot;

Although still in budding stages in many countries, wushu is an established international sport. In 1990, wushu was inducted as an official medal event in the Asian Games. Since then World Championships have taken place with 56 nations participating. Wushu is also vying for the Olympic games in the 21st century.|||Hey, I%26#039;ve done kung fu wushu for years now its the best Martial arts i think there is, it teaches you discipline and confidence also alot more, wushu is not about winning or grads its about understanding and restraint, I%26#039;m sure you%26#039;ll get it if you ever do wushu, but i think you should and even if you don%26#039;t like it its worth ago! Wushu change my live it makes you view the world in a different way lol i know its cheesy but hey lol. Good luck|||In America, usually the term Wushu refers to modern chinese martial arts, which are really interesting (visually) competitions.
