Is Wushu effective in the streets?

Let%26#039;s not discuss punches/kicks just if its effective or not|||look man dont listen to all the people above cuz they look like they dont know what wushu is so wushu is effective but you have to learn sanda which is the fighting part in it cuz the northern style or the chang quan and very good they give you grace power speed to fight but you have to learn the fighting itself i have been training wushu ( northern) for years got many medals none of them is gold to be honest mostly silvers but anyway i kicked many *** with it till i started ninja and went to japan thats the best martial art ever even in national geographic they said ninja is the best and strongest.|||well there is two types of wushu: sanda and contemporary wushu. Sanda is like muay thai but with throws and sweeps allowed. Contemporary wushu is just about forms. you could use it to fight, but the effectiveness would depend alot, ALOT on your instructor since contemporary wushu is really only taught for forms competition, not for fighting anymore. you can almost compare contemporary wushu to tai chi in that both heavily rely on forms, but in tai chi you can learn how to use it to fight if your instructor knows push hands and if they know how to use it for a fight. wushu, well, your instructor has to know how to use it in a fight, and that varys alot from instructor to instructor. if you do some sort of kung fu (ex: wing chung, five animal style) then you should be able to break down most of your wushu forms and see what can be used for a fight.

but you should really ask your instructor if he/she knows how to use contemporary wushu as a martial art. if they dont, then try to break it down, make some combos from it, and make the most of it until you go to a seminar and find someone who knows.

and to answer you question. in china there are two types of wushu (wushu means martial arts, but in competitions, it means two things) : sanda and contemporary wushu.

Sanda: very effective, like muay thai but with takedowns.

contemporary wushu: not effective at all, refrain from using it if possible. but if your trying to get away you can do it with style! although, you could give the guy a 540 kick if he%26#039;s not expecting it, but thats hard to do, so, no, its not really effective on the streets. |||Wushu is used more for the movies, Jet Li is trained in Wushu but it is more flash then power and technique. It all depends on what what you are getting into the street, a one on one fight, I would go with something else, to distract someone it works well.|||WUSHU IS NOT A MARTIAL ART. IT IS A SPORT IN CHINA WERE GUYS, THAT KNOW DIFFERENT MARTIAL ARTS, COME TOGETHER AND FIGHT. |||for getting money as a street performer...yeah

which style do you practice, northern or southern?|||I doubt it. It%26#039;s mostly about flare.
