What are some differences and similarities in kung fu and wushu?

not the true definition lie kung fu is total accomplishment or achievement or wushu is a general twem for CMA im talkin about the actual martial arts

Shaolin Kung Fu

Wushu|||Kung-Fu is the traditional Chinese Martial Art and Wu Shu is the sport (generic) version of this that is why Wu Shu has more acrobatic movements in its patterns (forms, kata, poomse etc...) and is more widely used in competition becuse it is basicaly designed if you will to show the beauty of the Chinese martial arts more over traditional Kung-Fu (I think they are both beautiful) which is the combat application of Chinese Martial Arts.|||Kung Fu= is a chinese word that means an individual%26#039;s hard earned or mastered skill. It can be applied to any physical skill like cooking, painting, carpentry or even singing or dancing and not just for fighting. It became popular in the 70s as a household word in the U.S. due to Bruce Lee%26#039;s popularity and was then commonly associated with the traditional chinese fighting arts.

Wu Shu= is the chinese word used today to refer to the different chinese fighting art forms promoted with the sanction of the chinese governing body today. It was adapted by the chinese to avoid the confusion brought about by the use of the word Kung Fu.

The main differences are the fact that Kung Fu refers to individual skills. So anyone can just make up his own way of fighting, refine and master it then claim it as his Kung Fu. This lead to so many different individual styles that usually led to rivalries and disputes. Wu shu on the otherhand are fighting forms or systems developed by the Central Wu shu Institute in China that unified all the different established and recognized individual forms into several standardized forms for easier regulation and teaching in a curriculum setting as well as uniform application for sports competitions. After all, it is hard to judge and score kung fu competitions when there are way too many different styles with varied applications being used. A unified standard for teaching and scoring is needed, hence the establishment of the Wu Shu Institute.|||Same thing , different names.
