Similarities and differences between Karate and Wushu?

I think some of their techniques are similar.I am interesetd in both arts.|||Holy s***! That is actually kind of a heavy question but here goes, and this are just my observations I%26#039;m not an expert;

Similarities;

Weak stance, weak technique, that, both Karate and Wushu have in common for sure.

Emphasis on drilling basics for more repetitions than Kata or Taolu.

Purely physical forms for beginers, near purely meditative forms for advanced students. It is said in Tai Chi %26quot;most martial arts go from hardness (external, physical) to softness (internal, meditative), but Tai Chi goes from softness to hardness.%26quot; Both Wushu and Karate however, are %26quot;hard%26quot; styles that begin physical, and end meditative.

Mixing up strikes with %26quot;stand up%26quot; grappling. Misconception of Karate, it actually has quite a wide library of throws, locks and trips, not to mention escapes. Wushu has an even more extensive library, some critics even within Chinese martial arts having said its too extensive.

They both mention the word %26quot;chi%26quot; at some point, usually though in advanced training.

Differences;

Karate has broken, linear motions emphasizing muscle power, Wushu has circular motions emphasizing acquiring power not through muscle, but through centrifugal force. You ever take a chain, or a rope with a weight at the end and spun it round and round? When you hit something after something like that is spun around, it gets hit really hard; that is the principle of circular movement in Kung Fu. As the limbs move in a circle, the centrifugal force gathers power with less muscular energy being wasted, the one draw back being however, that the more power you want, the bigger the circle the limb has to move in, rendering you vulnerable if you time it wrong. Because Karate%26#039;s movements are %26quot;smaller,%26quot; it is more forgiving of bad timing and mistakes, wereas Wushu is not.

Wushu has long Katas, Karate has short Katas. Tao Lu (or Kata, its the same thing) in Chinese Wushu is often 108 steps long taught in three separate sequences. First is the beginer%26#039;s, then the intermediate, and finally the 108 step master%26#039;s sequence. Also, usually a style has a total of 5 forms to learn, each, similarly divided into 3 sequences. Karate, on the other hand, because of its emphasis on delivering maximum power at maximum speed and ultimately ending a fight with a single blow, emphasizes brief Kata, with the idea, that a fight will be brief.

Wushu training, regardless of style, also includes training in Chi Kung, whereas Karate does not.

Even though stances are regarded as important in Karate, they are not trained in as extensively as they are in Wushu.

Wushu looks cooler.

later.

|||First of all, Karate is Japanese and Wushu is Chinese. Second of all, what I know about Karate says that Karate is a very direct and fairly practical art. Wushu, on the other hand, is performance-oriented. It looks spectacular, but some of it is a bit superfluous and indirect. Both are good martial arts, though.|||I agree with the previous answer, to a point. Karate is not more forgiving and chinese styles minimize the size of their circles and still have great power. Karate tends to leave you far more open. Karate is also slower without great repitition and in most cases, the average practitioner really isnt any good, that ive met anyway. but performance wushu isnt really combat effective so........|||Karate is NOT a Japanese art!

It is from Okinawa.

The term Wushu means Stop Fight Art.

It refers to all the martial arts of China.

Bujutsu is the Okinawan translation for Wushu.

You are obviously thinking about modern wushu, which is an acrobatic form of Chinese MA. Don%26#039;t waste your money or time. Look for someone who teaches Traditional Wushu.

If you are going to study Karate, be careful there too.

Send me the info of any school you are interested. I%26#039;ll help you find a good school.

|||Karate is a single martial arts discipline.

Wushu is a government approved (China) homogenization of several martial arts.
